COURSE DURATION:         1 Day 9.30 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.

RATIONALE FOR COURSE:

Healthcare provision is governed securely having due respect for its clients and staff safety and rights.  All those working within this type of environment must be trained in statutory and mandatory areas.  Refresher courses are required at least yearly by all staff.

AIMS/OBJECTIVES

  • Understanding the need for Refresher Training;
  • Understanding relevant legislative updates;
  • Understanding risk in all mandatory areas;
  • Being aware of workplace safety measures and their updates;
  • Being aware of legal compliance for all staff.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Delegates will, by the end of the session have an updated awareness in the following areas:

  • Assessing and practising within recognised legislative and compliance areas
  • The legislation in relation to working in the care sector
  • How to identify, assess and manage risk in specific areas of practice
  • The practical elements of applying theory to practice
  • Individual responsibilities
  • Maintaining good practice and record keeping
  • Reporting and managing incidents

TARGET AUDIENCE

Care and Nursing Staff, Junior and Senior Staff, Social Care Staff, Domiciliary and Community Staff and any others who have an involvement in areas where safety issues and good practice are vital to uphold.

All staff must have completed the full courses for each subject area within the last two years.

COSHH – Handling Chemicals Safely and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

Fire Safety – Statistics, Fire Triangle, Types of Fire, Fire Extinguishers, PEEPS Fire Plans, Local Practice & Policies, Actions on Discovering Fire

Infection Control – Legislation, Types of Healthcare Acquired Infections, Chain of Infection, COSHH, RIDDOR, Common Infections Including MRSA, & C Diff, Universal Precautions

Food Hygiene – The Law, Personal Hygiene, Food Poisoning, Bacteria, Prevention of Contamination, Environmental Health Responsibilities, Hand Hygiene, Principles of Safe Cooking and Storage of Food

Safeguarding Vulnerable Children (Level 1 & 2) – Legislation, Types and Signs of Abuse, Risk, Reporting, Responsibilities, Best Practice and Who to Contact

Protection of Vulnerable Adults – (Level 1 & 2) – Legislation, Acts/Symptoms of Abuse, Risk, Reporting, Responsibilities, Taking Action including capacity, consent and confidentiality

Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards – Overview and refresher on the Mental Capacity Act and update on changes to the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

TRAINER BIOGRAPHY:

Cheryl Keeling is a Registered Mental Health Nurse with extensive experience in the care and management of individuals in varying areas of practice.  Her predominant background is in the field of forensic mental health where she has worked in secure and challenging areas including three years with Gwent and South Wales Police.  Cheryl has also worked within the NHS and in the Private Sector both as a Practitioner and a Manager.  She is a Six Sigma Project Manager, a Best Interests Assessor under the Mental Capacity Act, a Specialist Assessor for the Council of Forensic Practitioners, an Independent Hospital Manager and a Specialist Assessor for CQC.  She is PTLLS accredited allowing her to teach post 16 year olds in higher education and development and undertakes work as an independent trainer.  She has developed her training courses through knowledge gained from her working life utilising her experiences to impart realistic and understandable information.  Cheryl is an excellent communicator and has established herself a reputation as being a dynamic healthcare trainer who receives excellent accolades.
